During her speech last month at the Presidents Luncheon, ASME President Madiha El Mehelmy Kotb, who conducted research on Maglev (magnetic levitation) trains early in her distinguished engineering career, likened ASME embarking on its new direction to a Maglev train gaining momentum. The luncheon on Nov. 17 welches one of many special events taking place during the 2013 ASME International Congress and Exposition.The Congress, held Nov. 15-21 at the Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego, drew mora than 3,300 attendees this year. In plus-rechnen to the many luncheons, receptions, lectures and other exciting special events, the Congress featured more than 600 technical sessions, 1,600 technical papers and 1,500 additional presentations.Five forces push and pull our train along its track and are key to helping us fulfill our strategic priorities in workforce development, energy, and auf der ganzen welt impact, President Kotb said. A confidentiality agreement is a contract between an employee and an employer, in which the employee agrees not to disclose or profit from any proprietary information related to company operations. What is a Confidentiality Agreement? Confidentiality agreements are legally binding contracts in which one party promises to keep trade secrets and not to disclose secrets without authorization from a superior. These agreements are usually binding until the private information is commonplace or the receiving party is released from the contract, whichever occurs first. While these contracts were once more common among executives and celebrities, theyve now trickled down to ordinary workers the kinds without golden parachutes, fat bank accounts or massive stock options. If youre applying for a job in an industry wh ere ideas are employers bread and butter, youre likely to be asked to sign one. Before you commit, its essential to understand what these agreements are and how they can affect your current and future employment. While its obviously reasonable for your future employer to protect their intellectual property, you also have rights and requirements namely, the need to make a living, should you change jobs, get laid off, or otherwise move on from the company. Non-Disclosure Agreement Provisions A confidentiality agreement is also known as a non-disclosure agreement or an NDA. Confidentiality agreements protect private company information like financial details, business strategies, customer lists, or products and services underway or in development, and prevent employees from communicating or profiting from sensitive information. In addition to protecting sensitive information, these agreements protect patent rights and avoid issues. If a confidentiality agreement is broken, the inj ured party can seek monetary damages or compensation for breach of contract. Most confidentiality agreements also contain a provision that states that all technology or access to this sensitive information should be returned before the end of the agreement or employment, whichever comes first. Confidentiality agreements must determine two times periods The period of time in which the disclosed information is determined and agreed upon and the period in which the information must be kept secret. If a time period is not specified, there is a greater gunst der stunde of litigation and judicial review to determine fair and equitable ruling. When to Sign In most cases, confidentiality agreements are signed when an individual is first hired and are valid through the termination of their employment or, in some cases, a period of time after employment ends. First, they might not want you to share their interview questions or their recruiting practices. Or, they might be planning to discuss company issues or problems that they want your opinion on, but dont want to become public. In other cases, the interview might include the disclosure of trade secrets. The purpose of this article is to clarify the meaning of the phrases Critical Success Factors and Critical/Key Success Indicators and to describe their importance and use in business. Definition and Examples of Critical Success Factors (CSFs) Critical Success Factors are those variables or circumstances necessary to enable a positive outcome for a business program or strategy. The CSFs are the expected causal variables of a particular desired outcome.Examples include A project team identified the need to gain training on Agile methodologies to replace their reliance on traditional the critical path project a pproach as a critical success factor with the complicated new software development initiative.The general manager supported the teams recommendation for investment in a new customer relationship management software system as part of the plan to strengthen overall customer satisfaction. The new software was identified as one critical success factor for gaining the ability to better track and respond to inquiries from their customers. The senior management team identified three critical success factors in enabling their new strategy in the marketplace identifying and hiring the right skill tischsets defining and implementing a strategy execution approach that captured lessons learned in the market and the ability of marketing to gain the attention of a critical group of early adopters in the targeted markets.The sales manager understands that training, follow-up and the use of a defined sales process all contribute to increasing sales. She measures and monitors a set of indicators tha t tell zu sich whether her representatives are engaging in the behaviors that enable growth in sales. Identifying Critical Success Factors Management and project teams work hard to discern between variables that simply correlate with outcomes and those that have a causal effect. In many circumstances, the identification of CSFs is an outcome of research and exploration, financial or statistical modeling and informed discussion and debate. When a situation does bedrngnis lend itself to rigorous statistical analysis, the identification of the CSFs becomes an exercise in identifying and making assumptions. Issues to consider when striving to identify CSFs includes What variables or factors are likely to impact our desired outcome?Are we able to perform statistical analysis based on past data?What changes in behavior must occur to create the desired outcomes?What conditions must exist or change to create the desired outcomes?What skills do we need to add or acquire to achieve succe ss?What tools must we add or master to allow us to achieve our goals? Critical or Key Success Indicators (CSIs) While Critical Success Factors are the cause in a cause and effect relationship, CSIs are the measures that link the actions or causes to the outcomes. A Critical Success Indicator is analogous to the stopwatch readings of a marathon runner or the readings of fuel economy in an automobile. Consider The marathon runner understands that she must maintain a particular pace to finish with a time that will place her in the top ten runners in her category. The readings do not impact her success directly. However, they offer guidance on whether she might increase her pace to keep up with the competition or slow her pace to conserve energy for the final leg of the race. The critical success factors for her running success included her training regimen, diet, and mental preparation. The readings are simply indicators of her progress toward her goals. Critical success indicator s can be developed for each of these CSFs. A driver focused on maximizing fuel economy is dependent upon readings from the cars computer to understand how he is doing. The critical success factors for maximizing fuel efficiency include such factors as average speed and the pace of starting as well as the frequency of stopping. The economy readings are simply indicators suggesting whether his actions are yielding the desired result. The timing or reading itself does not impact the outcome or success. However, the CSI offers guidance on whether the actions are yielding the outcomes that enable increased sales. Developing Key Success Indicators (CSIs) After careful identification of CSFs, the manager or professional works to identify measures that translate actions into meaningful measures or proxies of the CSFs. If you reference the CSI examples above, you can envision the indicators the marathon runner must monitor, including training time and effectiveness, dietary management an d sleep. Effective managers measure and monitor and strive to correlate their measures with their CSFs over time. The process of developing Key Success Indicators or CSIs is an ongoing, iterative process where frequent adjustments and refinements are required based on actual experience. The Bottom Line The identification of Critical Success Factors and their supporting Critical Success Indicators is an important part of improving the probability of success for an initiative or program. However, beware the adage of what gets measured gets done. Astute managers watch very carefully to correlate indicators to CSFs and to identify and substantiate that the CSFs have causal relationships with desired outcomes. Today, 47 miles and some of the harshest ocean and arctic conditions separate the two continents.However, there are many who believe there would be great economical, sociological, and political value in connecting the two land masses by bridge or tunnel. Imagine being able to travel from London to Moscow to Washington, DC, all over land.However, despite the potential benefits, there have yet to be any serious attempts to put these concepts into reality. The engineering challenges are unprecedented and costs are in the multiple billions of dollars.Climatic, Geologic, and Geographic ChallengesThe Bering Strait lies just south of the Arctic Circle and is subject to long, dark winters and extreme weather a verage winter lows of 20 C (4 F) with extreme lows approaching 50 C (58 F) and high winds. The strait is also choked with ice flows up to 6 feet thick for nearly eight months out of the year.Many concepts have been proposed for the Bering Strait Bridge, including dedicating a top level to vehicle traffic, opening it to cars and trucks in summer months, and dedicating a middle level to high-speed rail travel.The region is marked by frequent and sometimes large-magnitude earthquakes. Just south of the strait is the northern edge of the Pacific Ring of Fire, or Circum-Pacific belt, which generates 90% of the worlds earthquakes, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.Adding to these challenges is the barren desolation on either side of the strait. The nearest town of any size is 100 miles away, requiring thousands of miles of new highways and railways to support the infrastructure and workers for the project.Extraordinary Engineering ChallengesConnecting the continents with a bridge or tunnel would represent an extraordinary engineering feat. A bridge would trump the worlds longest, Chinas 102.4-mile Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge, a viaduct on the Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway. A tunnel would be nearly twice as long as the Chunnel, the 31-mile-long tunnel that connects England and France.The Discovery Channels Extreme Engineering Teams concept estimated the cost of the tunnel to be $70 billion. In addition to the exceptional length, the greatest challenge to bridge design is speeding ice flows, fruchtwein deadly in the spring when big sheets melt into fast-moving blocks. The supporting bridge piers would need to withstand up to 5,000 tons of pressure or more. Concrete, steel, and other building materials would need to resist radical temperature changes and the wear and tear of seawater and ice. Under these extreme temperature variations, even the smallest crack in the materials could cause corrosion and jeopardize the integrity of the structure.The late T.Y. Lin, considered one of the worlds greatest structural engineers, pioneered the use of prestressed concrete, combining the tensile strength of steel with concretes resistance to compression. Whereas steel can become brittle and lead to increased fatigue and cracking in a bridge, prestressed concrete would allow the structure to be stronger, more durable, and able to better withstand the forces of nature. In Lins design, prestressed concrete would encase everything, even the cables. It is believed that the improved structural performance would also help the bridge withstand earthquakes.In Lins and other engineering proposals, the bridge would be supported by more than 200 enormous piers. To address the dangers presented by ice flows, each pier would have an aerodynamic shape that would divert ice flows around the pier instead of piling up at its base and putting a potentially destructive amount of lateral stress on the bridge.Below the surface, several proposals envisioned a submerge d tube that would rest on the ocean floor. Entrepreneur and master electrician William Simpson has been proposing such ideas since 1995. One such proposal to the U.S. and Russian governments called for a prefabricated tunnel ordnungsprinzip and a unique quadrail superwide train. Prefabricated tunnel segments would be built above ground during the harsh winter and submerged during the summer thaw. However, a submerged tunnel requires a soft, level ocean floor as a base and the Bering Seas arctic floor topography is hard and uneven, making it difficult to support this design.Alternatively, the Interhemispheric Bering Strait Tunnel and Railway Group (IBTRG), a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit organization, has proposed building a tunnel beneath the ocean floor. Engineers would need to bore through 60 miles of rock and design a fire-safe tunnel, capable of withstanding frequent tremors and an earthquake of 7.9 on the Richter scale. Massive tunnel-boring machines, similar to the ones use d in the 35-mile long Gotthard Base Tunnel through the Swiss Alps, would be used to carve out the rock beneath the frigid ocean floor, working from each side of the strait.Unfathomable CostsIn 1994, Lin estimated the cost to build a bridge to be more than $4 billion. More recently, the Discovery Channels Extreme Engineering team, which submitted its own proposal, estimates the cost of a bridge at $15 billion-$25 billion and the highway, rail, and pipelines at $105 billion, five times the cost of the Channel Tunnel. This excludes the cost of new roads and railways to reach the bridge. The Discovery Channel team also estimated the cost of a tunnel to be $70 billion. Either way, the bridge or tunnel would most likely be the most expensive infrastructure project ever constructed.Pipedream or Reality?To some, the thought of building an overland connection between the two continents via the Bering Strait is a mere romantic pipedream.
